Cessna Citation I For Sale
The Cessna Citation I, designated the Model 500, is the aircraft that launched one of the most successful business jet families in aviation history. Entering service in 1972, the Citation I was designed as a practical, easy to fly light jet that could operate from short runways and be flown by a single pilot. Over 690 Model 500 and Citation I aircraft were delivered before production ended in 1985.
Powered by two Pratt and Whitney Canada JT15D-1A engines, each producing 2,200 pounds of thrust, the Citation I cruises at approximately 350 knots with a range of 1,175 nautical miles. The cabin seats five to six passengers and features a small lavatory at the rear. The aircraft's straight wing design was intentionally chosen for its excellent low speed handling characteristics, though it resulted in a modest cruise speed that earned the type its affectionate nickname among pilots.
Design Philosophy
The Citation I was Cessna's deliberate response to the complexity and high operating costs of early business jets. Its straight wing allows steep approaches and short field performance, while the simple systems reduce maintenance requirements and training costs. The aircraft is certified for single pilot operation and can operate from runways as short as 3,200 feet, opening up access to smaller regional airports that many other jets cannot reach.
The Citation I was succeeded by the Citation II, which offered a stretched fuselage and improved performance, and eventually by the Citation CJ1 as the entry level Citation model.
